Resident Evil 4 Bolt Thrower usage guide

The Bolt Thrower in Resident Evil 4 can be found as part of the Merchant’s wares fairly early in the campaign. You’ll meet this friendly fella right after you escape the Factory and just prior to reaching the Mountain Village. The weapon itself only costs 10,000 pesetas, a very small amount, making it a worthwhile purchase down the line.

As mentioned earlier, the Bolt Thrower is perfect for stealthily taking out enemies. The noise each shot makes is barely audible, so if hostiles are far apart, then others won’t be able to hear it, unless a mob starts yelling. Still, there are a few downsides, such as weak power, low rate-of-fire, and slow reload time. Ammunition capacity and reload time will probably be the upgrades you’ll want to focus on, as this will allow you have multiple bolts in the magazine, and you can reload more of them in one action.

Apart from the above, the Resident Evil 4 Bolt Thrower has a few quirks:

  • Disposable knives and large resources can be used to craft additional bolts.
  • Alternatively, you can combine small resources and gunpowder to make attachable mines.
  • Regular bolts can be picked up from enemies, ensuring that you don’t waste ammo that often.
  • Attachable mines, meanwhile, can be selected by aiming the weapon and pressing the left thumbstick. This will turn the Bolt Thrower into something akin to the Mine Thrower from the original game. Naturally, the resulting explosion would cause the projectile to be destroyed.
